- Getting started with Bút Nghiên for teachers
Your first five steps as a teacher: create an account, set up a class and invite students, write a multiple-choice exam, open the exam room and see class scores.
- Getting started with Bút Nghiên for students
What students need to know: create an account, join a class with your teacher's code, take online exams, check your scores and review questions you got wrong.
Featured topics
- Run a live quiz game in class
Turn a multiple-choice exam into a projected game: students join with a game PIN on their phones, fast right answers score more, plus a leaderboard and Excel report.
- Run a Golden Bell game online in class
Run Golden Bell in Bút Nghiên: students answer on their phones, a wrong answer means leaving the floor, the teacher rescues the audience, the last one standing wins.
- Picture puzzle: a keyword guessing game
Run a picture puzzle game in Bút Nghiên: the class answers correctly to open tiles, then guesses the mystery keyword or image for bonus points. No PowerPoint needed.
- What does shuffling a multiple-choice exam mean?
Shuffling an exam is two separate actions: shuffling the question order and shuffling the answer order. A worked example shows the correct answer moving from C to B.
Account
- Limits to know when using Bút Nghiên
A summary of the numbers you'll often run into: file upload sizes, OTP codes, password length, exam time limits and number of attempts.
Sign in with your email and password, or with Google when the page has a “Continue with Google” button. Teachers go to the teacher dashboard, students to the student dashboard, and administrators to the “System overview”.
- Create an account and verify your email with an OTP code
Create a Bút Nghiên account on a single screen: fill in your details, get a 6-digit verification code (OTP) by email, choose Student or Teacher mode, then set a password.
- Forgot your password? Reset it
If you forget your password, you get a link by email to set a new one. The link works only once and expires quickly. Once you've reset it, every device signed in to this account is signed out.
- Profile, avatar and changing your password
On the “Settings” page, you can edit your full name, phone number and avatar, and change your password. Your email can't be changed here.
- Notifications
Bút Nghiên lets you know about new exams, assignments, submissions and scores, or when someone joins your class. See them all on the “Notifications” page (the bell icon in the top bar).
- Switch between Teacher and Student mode
One Bút Nghiên account works in both modes. You can switch modes at any time from the account menu; the data of the other mode is kept as it is.
- Light or dark theme and display language
Choose a light background, a dark background or follow your device, and choose the language for Bút Nghiên's buttons and menus. Your choice is saved in the browser on the device you're using.
- Delete your Bút Nghiên account
You can delete your account yourself in “Settings”, confirming with an OTP code sent to your email. Once it's deleted, you can't sign in again and the account can't be restored.
Students · Overview
- The student dashboard
The first page you see after signing in with Student mode. It brings together your to-dos, open exams, assignments, classes and recent results — only your own.
Students · Classes
- Join a class with a code or link
You join a class with the join code your teacher gives you, or by opening a link or scanning a QR code. When you type the code, uppercase, lowercase and dashes don't matter.
- The student class page
Each class has its own page with four tabs: overview, tests, assignments and attempt history. You only see your own work and scores, not your classmates'.
Students · Exams
- Your exams and practice exams
The “Exams” page lists your classes' exams and exams open to everyone. Exams not linked to a class have the “Open to all” label: every student on Bút Nghiên can see and take them. The button on each exam changes with its status: not started yet, overdue, no attempts left, or still open to you.
- The preparation page before an exam
Before you start, you check the exam details, read the rules and tick the agreement box. This page doesn't show any questions or answers.
- Taking an exam in the exam room
In the exam room, the timer counts down by the server clock, your answers are saved automatically and you can flag questions to review later. When time is up, your exam is submitted automatically.
- Practice: check your answer after each question
In a practice exam (labeled “Practice”), you find out right away whether each answer is right, read the explanation and redo the questions you got wrong. Practice attempts don't count toward the class's official scores.
- Exams limited to one device
When the teacher turns on “Limit to one exam session at a time”, each attempt can only be taken in one tab or on one device at a time.
- Take an exam from a link or QR code
Your teacher can send you a link or QR code for an exam. The page that opens tells you whether you can start right away, need to sign in, or whether the exam isn't open yet or has closed.
Students · Assignments
- Submit your homework
You submit your work by writing it in the box, attaching files, or both. Each file can be up to 15MB. You can resubmit if your teacher allows it and your work hasn't been graded yet.
Students · Results
- See your score, answers and explanations
You see your score and the answers the way your teacher set them up for each exam. If your teacher hasn't released them yet, your exam was still submitted successfully — you just can't see the score yet.
- Mistakes notebook: review questions you got wrong
The Mistakes notebook collects the multiple-choice questions you got wrong or left blank, from exams where your teacher released both scores and answers. You can review the answers, mark questions as mastered and practice them again right away.
Teachers · Overview
- The teacher dashboard
The first page you see in Teacher mode: work to grade, exams in progress, upcoming exams, assignment due dates and shortcuts for creating exams.
Teachers · Classes
- Create a class, invite students and manage your roster
Create a class with a name and subject, invite students with a join code or QR code, and manage the student list right from the class page.
- Join code, QR code and showing it on a projector
In the “Invite students to the class” box, you turn joining by code on or off, copy the code or link, and show a QR code for the whole class to scan. Changing the code makes the old code and QR stop working; students already in the class aren't affected.
- Import a student list from CSV or Excel
Add many students to a class at once with a CSV file or by pasting from Excel. Students who already have an account get an invitation and confirm joining themselves; for emails without an account, you can create accounts and send activation invite emails.
Teachers · Exams
- Your exam list
The “Exams” page shows every exam you've created, lets you filter by status and gives you quick access to tasks: grading essays, settings, printing, sharing and viewing scores.
- Choose how to create an exam
The “Create exam” page groups the ways to create an exam into three groups. Pick based on what you have: starting from scratch, an existing Word/Excel/PDF file, or a question bank to draw questions from.
- Create an exam in 4 steps: details, questions, exam room, publish
The “Write step by step” exam builder walks you through 4 steps. The exam you're working on is saved automatically in this device's browser, so you can recover it even if you close the page by accident. To save the exam to Bút Nghiên so you can keep working on it later or on another device, click “Save draft” (students can't see drafts).
- Exam room settings: Test mode and Practice mode
Step 3 of the exam builder has all the exam room options. Once the exam is created, the “Settings” button on the exam card opens a quick settings box with fewer options.
- Advanced editor: write your exam as text
The advanced editor has two columns: on the right you type the exam using a simple syntax, on the left a preview updates instantly. “Save draft” only saves a draft exam; it isn't open to students yet.
- Text syntax for writing exams
When you write in the advanced editor (or prepare a Word file to import), you follow a few simple rules: start with Question 1., put a * before the correct answer, and write EXPLANATION: before the explanation. Bút Nghiên detects the question type, points and difficulty automatically.
- Import an exam from Word, Excel or a text-based PDF
Upload an existing exam file (Word .docx, Excel .xlsx or a text-based PDF, up to 20MB). Bút Nghiên separates the questions, answers and explanations, then opens the advanced editor so you can check everything before saving.
- Share an exam with a link or QR code and let people take it without an account
Each exam has its own exam link and QR code. You can copy the link, show the QR code, change the link if it leaks, and decide whether people without an account can take the exam.
- Print several paper codes, save as PDF, download Word
From the exam card, click “Print exam”: choose 1–10 paper codes (4 by default), print or save as PDF from your browser, or download a Word file. Paper codes are numbered 101, 102… and an answer key is included at the end.
- Results, score distribution and reminding students who haven't started
An exam's results page shows the average score, score distribution, class progress and every attempt. There's no button to release results: students see their scores according to the exam's settings.
- Item analysis: difficulty, discrimination and distractors
The “Per-question analysis” tab on the results page shows which questions are too easy, too hard, poor at separating stronger and weaker students, or have wrong options almost nobody picks — so you can review your exam.
- Grade essay questions in an exam
Essay and short-answer questions are graded by hand. Each question you save updates the attempt's total score right away; there's no separate step to release scores.
- Candidates' integrity log
While a candidate takes the exam, their browser records leaving the exam tab or window, losing the connection, and copying or pasting. The log is for reference only: it doesn't affect the score and doesn't submit the exam.
Teachers · Assignments
- Assign homework, set submission rules and grade
Give a class a written or file-upload assignment, set the due date and maximum score, decide whether late submissions or resubmissions are allowed, then grade and return scores to each student.
Teachers · Resources
- Question banks
A question bank is your store of questions, organized by folder, difficulty, cognitive level and tag. Questions in a bank are used to draw exams with a blueprint. Students can't see question banks.
- Question tags: tagging and filtering by tag
Add up to 10 tags to each question (for example Geometry, Chapter 2) to filter questions in the bank, see results by tag, and let students review by tag in their Mistakes notebook.
- Exam blueprints: draw exams automatically from a bank
An exam blueprint lets you set how many questions to take from each folder, difficulty and cognitive level (R, U, A, AA). Bút Nghiên draws exactly that many questions from one bank to create a draft exam. If the bank doesn't have enough questions, Bút Nghiên tells you what's missing and doesn't add questions on its own.
- Rubrics
A rubric is made of criteria, and each criterion has several score levels (for example Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Not yet). Rubrics help you grade essay questions and assignments more consistently.
Teachers · Analytics
- Teacher analytics
The “Analytics” page brings together data from your exams and classes: score distribution by exam, most-missed questions and average scores by class. Students don't have this page.
Live games
- Join a live game with a game PIN
Enter the game PIN your teacher shows on screen, choose a nickname, then answer right on your phone. You don't need an account if your teacher allows guests.
- Create a live game from an exam or question bank
Choose a question source, the pacing and format, set the time per question, then open the lobby. Only single-answer, multiple-answer and true/false questions are used in the game.
- Host a game on the projector
The host screen is what you project for the whole class: a lobby with the game PIN and QR code, buttons to start, reveal the answer, move to the next question, lock the room and end the game, plus sound and full screen.
- Team play: forming teams and team scoring
Students are split evenly into 2 to 8 teams. A team's score is the average score of the members who answered, so it's fair whether a team is big or small.
- Game reports, Excel download and replaying hard questions
After each game, see who came out on top, which questions were hard and who got which question wrong, download the results to Excel and quickly create a new game from the questions the class struggled with.
- Public library: play ready-made question sets
The Library contains question banks that other teachers have shared publicly. Search by name or subject, then click “Play now” to start a game with your class.
Administration
- The admin console: system overview and subjects
Administrators go straight to the “System overview” after signing in. The sidebar has a “System administration” group (Overview, Users, Subject) and a “Teaching tools” group.
- Manage users
Administrators find accounts, lock or unlock them, change roles and delete users on the “Users” page in the “System administration” group.
