Import a student list from CSV or Excel

Add many students to a class at once with a CSV file or by pasting from Excel. Students who already have an account get an invitation and confirm joining themselves; for emails without an account, you can create accounts and send activation invite emails.

Steps

  1. Open the class → “Students” tab → click “Import student list” (this button also appears when the class has no students yet).
  2. Choose a source: “Upload CSV file”, then “Choose .csv file” (in Excel: File → Save As → CSV UTF-8), or “Paste from Excel” (select the email and full name columns, press Ctrl+C and paste; no header row needed). Need a template? Click “Download template (.csv)”.
  3. Click “Preview”. The “Row-by-row preview” table shows how each row will be handled (“Status” column).
  4. If some emails have no account and the system allows it, the “Create accounts for emails without one (… emails) and send activation invite emails” box appears. Only tick it if you're sure those emails belong to students in your class.
  5. Click “Confirm … students”. The results screen counts “Invited”, “New accounts”, “Already in class” and “Skipped”, with a “Skipped rows” table showing the reasons. Click “Choose another file” to import more, or “Done”.

Options and limits

Will invite
Emails of students who already have an account and aren't in the class yet. The student gets the invitation in Bút Nghiên and only joins the class after confirming with the join code — so joining by code must be on for the class.
Already in class
The student is already a member and isn't added again.
No account yet
Skipped, unless you tick the create-accounts box (the status then changes to “Will create account & invite”).
Invalid email / Duplicate
The email is misspelled, is a system email, or repeats a row above. These rows aren't sent when you confirm.
Can't add
The email belongs to an account that isn't a student account, or is locked. For privacy reasons, Bút Nghiên doesn't say which kind of account it is.
Limits per import
CSV only, up to 2MB and 200 students per import. Each hour you can preview up to 5 times and confirm up to 10 times. In 24 hours you can look up at most 600 different emails.
Account creation limits
Each teacher can create up to 100 accounts in 24 hours (up to 1000 across the whole system). Administrators can turn this feature off; then the create-accounts box doesn't appear and emails without an account are skipped.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Your account needs a verified email before you can import a student list” → only accounts with a verified email can use this feature.
  • “The file isn't a CSV. In Excel, choose Save As CSV UTF-8.” → save the file again in CSV UTF-8 format.
  • “No "email" column found in the file…” → add a first header row with an email column (and a full name column if you have one).
  • “The file has more than 200 data rows…” → split the list into several smaller files.
  • “You've looked up too many emails in the past 24 hours. Please try again later.” → wait, then try again.
  • “You can only create up to 100 student accounts in 24 hours (… created).” → remove some rows without an account, or wait until the next day.
  • “The account list has just changed. Please preview it again, then confirm.” → click “Preview” again, then confirm.
  • New accounts can only sign in after the student opens the activation link in the email (valid for 7 days). If the email doesn't arrive, tell the student to use “Forgot password?” with that same email.
  • Students who already have an account get a class invitation notification; newly created accounts are added straight to the class. If joining by code is off for the class, you can't invite students who already have an account.
  • Only the class's teacher or an administrator can use this feature; archived classes can't import students.
