Getting started with Bút Nghiên for teachers

This guide walks you through one full round in Bút Nghiên, from creating your account to seeing your whole class's scores. Follow the five steps below in order; each one only takes a few minutes. If you need more detail on a step, click the guide linked to that step.

Step 1. Create a teacher account

  1. Open the Sign up page and fill in your full name and email.
  2. Click “Send code”, open the email and enter the 6-digit code.
  3. When asked to choose a mode, choose Teacher. Set a password of at least 8 characters, then finish signing up.
  • One account works for both roles. Later, you can switch to Student mode to try out your own exams.

Step 2. Create a class and invite students

  1. Choose “Classes” in the sidebar, click “Create new class”, and enter the class name and subject.
  2. In the class, click “Invite students” to get the class code, link or QR code. Students enter the code or scan the QR code to join the class.
  3. For a large class, use “Import student list” to add the whole class at once from a CSV file or by pasting from Excel.

Step 3. Write a multiple-choice exam

Choose “Exams”, then click “Create exam”. There are three ways to write it; pick whichever suits you best:

  1. Write question by question in a guided 4-step builder. Good for short exams or your first time.
  2. Upload a Word, Excel or text-based PDF file. Bút Nghiên separates the questions, answers and explanations so you can check them before creating the exam.
  3. Paste or type the whole exam using a simple syntax (Question 1., A., B., a * before the correct answer). Fastest when you already have the exam as text.
  • Photographed or scanned PDFs can't be imported because Bút Nghiên can't read text inside images. Use a Word file or a PDF with selectable text.

Step 4. Set up the exam room and assign it to a class

In the exam room settings step, you choose which class takes the exam, the opening and closing times, the time limit, the number of attempts allowed, whether to shuffle questions and answers, and when students can see their scores and the answers. When you're done, click “Publish exam now”.

To let people outside the class take it too, such as students from other classes or parents, share the exam with a link or QR code and allow taking it without an account.

Step 5. See scores and grade essays

Multiple-choice questions are graded as soon as students submit. Open the exam's “Scores” to see the score distribution, the list of attempts, who hasn't taken it yet and which questions many students got wrong.

If the exam has essay questions, go to the grading section to grade them one by one. The total score updates automatically after each question you save.

Extra: review with a live game

To make a review session livelier, use the exam you just wrote to start a live game: choose “Live games”, then click “Create game”. Students join with a game PIN on their phones, no account needed. You can choose individual play, team play, Golden Bell or Picture puzzle.
