Advanced editor: write your exam as text

The advanced editor has two columns: on the right you type the exam using a simple syntax, on the left a preview updates instantly. “Save draft” only saves a draft exam; it isn't open to students yet.

Steps

  1. Open it from the create exam page (the “Advanced editor” card → “Open editor”), or click “Switch to advanced editor” in the exam builder.
  2. Type the exam title in the box at the top of the page. Check the “Subject” box right next to it (it appears on every screen; on phones and tablets, the “Save draft” and “Basic editor” buttons are on a second row). On a phone, use the “Edit” / “Preview” buttons to switch between the typing panel and the preview.
  3. “Manual editing” tab (open by default; a new exam starts empty, and the faded text in the panel is only an example): type the exam in the right-hand panel (see the Text syntax guide, or click “See the syntax”). The “Multiple-choice question” and “True/False question” buttons insert sample questions. In the “Quick templates:” row, “Group heading” inserts the line [!b:$PHẦN I. Tên nhóm$], “End group” inserts the line [!b:$$] so that the questions typed after it aren't in any group, and “Insert example” inserts a sample exam. The “Auto-normalize syntax” button fixes the formatting to match the syntax (a [!b:$$] line at the end of the panel is kept). The “Add from question bank” button opens a picker: choose a bank, filter by folder, question type, difficulty or cognitive level, or search the content, tick the questions you want, then click “Add … questions to the exam”. The questions are copied to the end of the exam; the originals in the bank stay unchanged.
  4. “Upload Word / Excel file” tab: choose a .docx or .xlsx file (up to 10MB) to load its questions into the editor. PDF isn't accepted here.
  5. The “Preview” column on the left updates in real time: each question has a type label (Single answer, Multiple answers, True / False, Fill in the blank, Essay) and a difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard). Double-click a question (not an answer) to jump to its line on the right. A question after a [!b:$$] line has a thin “End of group — the questions below are not in any group” line above it; a [!b:$$] line you've just typed at the end of the panel shows this line right away too. Formulas written between two $ signs (see the Text syntax guide) appear as math right in the preview; a formula with a syntax error is shown as typed so you can fix it.
  6. Click “Save draft” to save it as a draft exam. When you see “Draft saved.”, you're done.
  7. To choose the subject, class and time and publish step by step: click “Switch to basic editor”. Your questions are carried over to step “2. Write questions” of the exam builder.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Please choose a subject before saving the draft.” → choose the subject in the “Subject” box next to the exam title.
  • “No questions to save yet.” → add at least one question.
  • “Failed to save draft” → check your connection, then click again.
  • “File upload failed. Please check the .docx/.xlsx format.” → save the file again as Word (.docx) or Excel (.xlsx), under 10MB.
  • “Question … is single-answer multiple choice but has … correct options.” → remove some * marks, or add [MULTIPLE] to that question.
  • “Question … has no correct answer selected.” → put a * before the correct option.
  • “Couldn't parse questions from the current content — kept the previous preview.” → check that what you just typed follows the syntax; the old preview is kept.
  • If you open the editor directly (not from the exam builder), the “Subject” box is preselected from the subjects of the classes you teach. If you have no classes yet, the box is left at “-- Choose a subject --”; choose a subject before saving.
  • Clicking “Save draft” again on the same page replaces the draft you saved before (as long as it is still a draft nobody has taken), so “Exams” doesn't fill up with extra drafts.
  • Draft exams aren't open to students yet. To open one: go to “Exams”, click “Settings” on the draft, check the times, choose “Open to students” under “Exam room status”, then click “Save exam settings”.
  • Reopen a draft from “Exams” with the “Continue editing” button or by clicking the exam title. If the exam has been deleted or doesn't belong to your account, the page says “Couldn't find the exam to keep editing”, with “Back to exams” and “Create a new exam” buttons. If there's a network error, the page has a “Try again” button.
