Candidates' integrity log

While a candidate takes the exam, their browser records leaving the exam tab or window, losing the connection, and copying or pasting. The log is for reference only: it doesn't affect the score and doesn't submit the exam.

Steps

  1. Candidates are told in advance: the “Integrity log” block appears on the exam preparation page, on the exam page opened from a link and in the guest name box; the agreement box before the exam also mentions the log.
  2. Quick view: “Scores” → “Attempts” tab → “Integrity log” column (a summary for each attempt), with a note that these are reference signals.
  3. To see one attempt in detail: click “Details” (or open it from the essay grading page) to go to the grading page. The “Integrity log” block (labeled “Reference”) has a summary and a timeline.
  4. The summary shows the items that aren't zero: “Left the tab … times” with the total time away, “Left the window … times”, “Offline … times”, “Copied … times”, “Pasted … times”; if there's nothing, it says “None recorded”.
  5. The timeline lists each event: “Left the exam tab”, “Returned to the exam tab”, “Switched to another window”, “Network connection lost”, “Back online”, “Copy”, “Paste” — with the time since the attempt started (+minutes:seconds), the time of day and how long the candidate was away; a departure with no return says “never returned”.

Options and limits

Recorded
Leaving and returning to the tab, leaving and returning to the window (only counted when away for more than 1/4 of a second), losing and regaining the connection, copying, pasting (each type at most once per second). Recorded in both Test and Practice mode, for both students and guests.
Not recorded
What was copied or pasted, keystrokes, screenshots, camera, microphone.
Limits
Up to 1000 events per attempt; when the log is cut off, the timeline says “Only the first 1,000 events are shown.” Events sent more than 10 minutes after submission or the end of the time limit aren't accepted.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Couldn't load the integrity log.” → click “Try again” (you can keep grading anyway).
  • The signals are sent by the candidate's browser and vary by device (for example, on a phone, switching to another app also counts as leaving the tab). Having no events doesn't prove the candidate never left the exam. Treat the log as reference information, not as proof of cheating.
  • Your own self-practice attempts don't show a log. The log doesn't slow down or block candidates from submitting.
