Question tags: tagging and filtering by tag

Add up to 10 tags to each question (for example Geometry, Chapter 2) to filter questions in the bank, see results by tag, and let students review by tag in their Mistakes notebook.

Steps

  1. In the create or edit question box, in the “Tags” field: type a tag name, then press Enter, a comma or a semicolon. Pasting text with commas splits it into several tags. Press Backspace when the field is empty to delete the last tag; click the x on a tag to delete that tag. A …/10 counter appears at the end of the field.
  2. The “Tags in this bank” block in the left column lists every tag with its number of questions. Click a tag to filter; choose “All tags” to clear the filter.
  3. You can also choose a tag in the “All tags” filter on the toolbar, or click a tag shown on a question. If no questions have the tag you filter by, the page says “No questions have the tag "…".” and shows a “Clear tag filter” button.
  4. The “Search question content, tags...” search box also searches tag names.

Options and limits

Limits
Up to 10 tags per question, and up to 50 characters per tag.
Duplicate tags
Uppercase and lowercase don't matter: geometry and Geometry are the same tag, and the spelling entered first is kept. Multi-word tags are kept whole and aren't split at spaces.
Filtering by tag
The whole tag must match: filtering by Geometry doesn't find questions tagged Geometry 3D. Uppercase, lowercase and accents don't matter.
Removing all tags
Delete each tag in the field, then save the question; it will no longer have any tags.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Up to 10 tags per question” or “Each tag can be up to 50 characters” (shown right below the tags field) → remove some tags or shorten the tag name.
  • Tag errors reported by the server also appear below the “Tags” field → fix them as the error message says, then save again.
  • The “Performance by tag” table on the results page uses the question's tags at the time students took the exam; changing tags later doesn't change the data for attempts already taken.
  • Tags travel with the question into the exam, so students can filter their Mistakes notebook by tag.
